‘Figures in Focus’ solo exhibition

Alexander had his first solo exhibition in July 2023 in the beautiful and historic venue of St Mary’s Church, Devizes.

The young artist exhibited over 250 artworks, most of which were from the last three years. They included oil paintings, drawings and sculptures, and also showcased for the first time Alexander’s recent work, studying traditional methods in classical portraiture.

The light and space in St Mary’s Church provided a magnificent venue for displaying his artwork and Alexander enjoyed the chance to talk to visitors and sharing his passion for art.

The exhibition ran from the 7th to the 9th July with the preview on the 6th and was hugely successful.

It raised funds for the St Mary Devizes Trust which will go towards the preservation of the building and the plans to turn it into an arts and community centre for future generations to enjoy.

Though St Mary’s has been used for performing arts before, ’Figures in Focus’ was the first art exhibition held in this vast Norman church and so this was also a chance to show how it could be used in the future. The challenge was to find ways to utilise the Grade I listed building to hang artwork without causing damage, whilst still incorporating the magnificent architecture into the exhibition.

Visitors enjoyed this unique combination, taking in the atmosphere created by the art amongst the ancient walls lit up by ever changing light streaming through the tall windows.
